The North School

Sixth Form Life

Sixth Form life is very different to your earlier compulsory schooling. The leap in expectation and the intensity and challenge of studying Level 3 courses is significant. At The North School you will benefit from a student-centred support system established to ensure that you derive maximum benefit from your time in the Sixth Form. Our team of education professionals working on your behalf means there is always someone to whom you can talk to.  We regard parents/carers as supportive partners in your education and provide them with regular updates on your progress. They have direct access to the Sixth Form Management Team as required.

Whilst developing independence is an important part of Sixth Form life, teamwork and partnerships are essential to ensuring success. Employers and visiting educational experts have a very valuable contribution to make and a programme of visitors and external speakers runs throughout the year.

Our head boy, head girl and their deputies are selected from the Sixth Form by the whole school. They have an important ambassadorial role and are also the leading representatives for student voice. All Sixth Form students are involved in the organisation of regular social and charitable events which provide opportunities for students to take leading roles and work with the community.

Since successful progression into employment, university or further training is ultimately your goal, you will be given support with UCAS applications, events to meet with employers and apprenticeship providers, opportunities to visit universities, and comprehensive careers guidance. In an increasingly competitive marketplace it is essential that you take every opportunity to develop your skills, understanding and experience so that you are able to realise your ambitions. We place emphasis on academic achievement, increasing your self-confidence and developing a sense of community responsibility. In return we ask that you take a full and active part in the life of The North School Sixth Form and act as positive role models for younger students.

2017 saw our best set of post-16 results ever, ranking us third in the county for student progress.  We have also seen a record number of students gaining places at their chosen universities with 64% of Year 13 taking this route in 2018.  Our 2018 results have also ranked us as making exceptional progress with our vocational courses at level 3 as well as achieving some of the best results in the county for our English and maths re-sits.

Our recent Ofsted inspection rated the Sixth Form as ‘Good’ stating ‘the quality of teaching has remained strong in both academic and vocational courses.  As a result, students, including those who are disadvantaged, make good progress, often better than other students nationally, in both academic and vocational qualifications’.
