Religious Education
The North School is a multicultural school with students and teachers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a school we believe in an inclusive and holistic curriculum and as such our RE curriculum is designed based on these principles.
The principal aim of our RE curriculum is to engage pupils in systematic inquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address. Through this, they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own. Students should extend and deepen their knowledge and understanding of a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, recognising their local, national and global context. Building on their prior learning, they learn to appreciate religions and worldviews in systematic ways.
In today's society it is essential that students have an understanding and appreciation for all members of our community. This is embedded in our whole school curriculum with a key focus within Personal Development and RE lessons. In these lessons students learn about the importance of the British values of democracy, rule of law, respect and tolerance and individual liberty.
Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from RE on the grounds that they wish to provide their own RE education. This RE provision will be the parents’ responsibility. Students who are aged 18 or over also have the right to withdraw themselves from RE. In the event that a parent wishes to withdraw their child from this area of the curriculum, we invite you to contact Mrs Matthews (Deputy Headteacher) or Mr Cox (Director of Personal Development) if you would like to know more about our curriculum, we will be very happy to talk through any concerns you may have.
