The Health & Social Care Department offers BTEC Level 1 and 2 award in Health and Social Care, and Level 3 BTEC National in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate and Diploma)
Our health and social care courses are for pupils wishing to move into the health or social sector and related occupations. Students are able to uncover the aspects of health & social care that makes working in this sector so fulfilling and motivating.
The BTEC Level 1 and 2 award in Health and Social Care is made up of 3 components. The first 2 are coursework based. In these components the students will study Human lifespan and development and Care services and values. The final component is an externally assessed component and makes up the other 40% of the qualification. In this component we draw together all the students’ knowledge in order for them to write their own care plan based on a specific case study. Students are able through this course to uncover the aspects of health & social care that makes working in this sector so fulfilling and motivating.
The BTEC National in Health and Social Care is a vocational qualification that will help prepare you for a wide range of careers or for further study on a range of degree programmes.
You will learn about how the human body changes over time and learn about what it means to work in the sector and what skills and behaviours you need. If you are studying the larger qualification such as the Diploma, you will also learn about the principles of safe practice when working in the sector, and the importance of respecting the individual differences and needs of service users.
The Level 2 Technical Certificate in working with children in Early Years and Primary settings is a qualification that covers a range of key subject areas that provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years 11 months old.
This exciting course is made up of classroom based learning covering a wide range of topics including – Supporting children’s play and development from birth to 11 years, the role of the child care practitioner and understanding legislation. There is also regular work experience in a variety of settings including, day nurseries, pre-schools, primary schools and children’s centres. 27% of the course is assessed by an external exam which is a scenario based short answer examination.

Can progress on to complete Level 3 Early Years Professional Status and then look at teacher training
Successful completion of the Level 2 Cache course in childcare prepares you for progression on to a level 3 course in childcare which can lead to some exciting career opportunities. Students completing the Level 3 courses can become teaching assistants, nursery assistants and even set up their own business as a childminder.
